Registration begins September 6. Link will not be available until then

Are the Online Refresher courses accredited for re-certification purposes?

The Cleveland Clinic Emergency Services Institute EMS Education Department offers these online refresher courses in accordance with the State of Ohio Revised Code 4765-19-01. The Refresher Courses are accredited by Ohio’s State Board of Emergency Services via Cleveland Clinic  accreditation #1409 for all levels of EMS training. The Online (Distance Learning) EMT and Paramedic Refreshers meet the State of Ohio requirements and the National Registry standards.

Who can take these "Complimentary" EMS Refresher Courses?

As a Cleveland Clinic Medical Command Fire Department affiliate or employee of Cleveland Clinic Health System you are entitled to receive a complimentary "FREE" EMT or Paramedic Refresher Course every 3 years to aid in the renewal of your State of Ohio and National Registry Re-Certification. We are committed to you, your education and professional development as an EMS-educated member of our pre-hospital family. Providing you with the highest caliber of education ensures that our communities in which you serve are receiving the best care available as we continue to put patients first. These ONLINE courses will be conducted through the Online Virtual Instructor Led Training program (VILT) via the new Cleveland Clinic  Learning Management System (LMS).

Admission Requirements / Pre-Requisites (OAC 4765-7-12; A 6-a)
Requirements for entry into our online Basic and/or Paramedic Refresher course

  • Currently certified EMT’S or Paramedics seeking renewal before their certificate expires.
  • Basic or Paramedic candidates who have failed a State or National Registry exam and are required to take a refresher before re-examination
  • Unfortunately, we will no longer be accepting refresher applications from EMS personnel OUTSIDE Cleveland Clinic Medical Control authority. This includes Private Ambulance companies. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Will the EMS Refresher Courses meet the *NEW* National Registry Transitional Update criteria?

The State EMS Board has adopted the National EMS Education Standards and the National EMS Scope of Practice Model as a minimum guideline for Ohio EMS providers. The action does not reduce the current Ohio EMS scope of practice in fact additional psycho-motor skills have been added to the draft Ohio curriculum and scope of practice rules. The NREMT Transition Policy requires a stateapproved course and the Ohio Refresher programs will be the only courses approved by the State Board to meet the NREMT transition criteria.

The 30 hour EMT and 48 hour Paramedic VILT EMS Refresher Courses meet all objectives and policies set forth by the State of Ohio, National Registry and the NREMT Transition Policy.
Certificate of Completions will reflect and state that you have met the Transitional update requirements.
